Milwaukee Jewish Coalition for Literacy
Have you heard about the Milwaukee Jewish Coalition for Literacy? Our coalition, operating under the auspices the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations, believes that the ability to read is a fundamental human right.

Our Mission
Our mission is to effect a dramatic increase in the number of Jews involved in local efforts to guarantee that every child can read at grade level. We are collaborating with "Let’s Read Milwaukee!", a program initiated and coordinated by the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). Working together, we can vastly improve the reading competency of Milwaukee’s children.

Over the past nine years more than 150 tutors from
Milwaukee
’s Jewish community have served as volunteers in the
Milwaukee
Jewish Coalition for Literacy. Reading tutors
spend 1-2 hours per week during the school year, working one-on-one with elementary school children from MPS. We are targeting children from kindergarten to grade 3. Studies reveal that children who can read at grade level at the end of third grade have a much greater chance for success in life than those who don’t. It is said that up until third grade we learn to read. After third grade, we read to learn. It is clear that these early reading years are critical in the life of a child.
MJCL is now recruiting additional
volunteers from the Jewish community to serve as reading tutors for elementary
school children.

, has openings for new volunteer tutors. Volunteers
are asked to commit one hour each week, working one-on-one helping children to
improve their reading skills. Literacy

availability. For information, call Jeri Danz at 414-390-5781.
Consider the following statistics:
- 21 million Americans can’t read at all
- 45 million Americans are marginally illiterate
- 1 in 5 high school graduates cannot read their diplomas
- The percentage of 4th grade MPS students who have only minimal reading competence is about three times the state average
